Veteran choreographer Saroj Khan that had been admitted to a hospital in Mumbai on June 20 after she complained of breathing problems passed away now. The final rites of all Saroj Khan will be carried out in Malvani at Malad, Mumbai today.
She died due to a cardiac arrest at the ICU of Guru Nanak Hospital after she complained of breathing problems where she was admitted on. In a career spanning more than four decades, Khan has been attributed to choreographing more than 2,000 songs.
Saroj Khan is survived by three children namely – Hamid Khan, Hina Khan, and Sukanya Khan. By playing with the youthful Shyama onscreen in Nazarana Saroj Khan started her career. She became a background dancer under the mentorship of dance director B Sohanlal. She married film choreographer B Sohanlal in 1962 at the age of 13 while he was 41, a married man with four kids. At age 14, Saroj had her first kid with Sohanlal.
In a throwback interview, she had said she was able to examine in college those days, then one day his dance master Sohanlal tied a black ribbon around her throat, and she got married.
The three-time National Award winner had choreographed for a few of the most memorable tracks, such as ‘Dola Re Dol’ out of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Devdas’, ”Ek Do Teen’ out of Madhuri Dixit-starrer’ Tezaab’ and’Ye Ishq Haaye’ out of’Jab ‘ We Met’ in 2007.
Saroj Khan shot to fame in the late eighties, choreographing Sridevi superhits such as ‘Main naagin tu sapera’ (‘Nagina’) and ‘Hawaa hawaai’ (‘Mr India’).
Recently, she had been selective in signing new projects. Her recent roles include choreographing Kangana Ranaut in ‘Manikarnika’ past year and’Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ at 2015. Her significant assignment had been directing Madhuri’s movies in the past year’s release, ‘Kalank’.
She last choreographed for ‘Tabaah Hogaye’, featuring Madhuri out of filmmaker Karan Johar’s production “Kalank” in 2019.
