Will there be a third season of The OA?

The OA Season 3

Bonkers or bizarre, Netflix’s The OA is unlike anything you’ve seen on screen. Delving into near-death experiences, inter-dimensional travel and consciousness, the first two seasons (the next of which is available to stream today) serves up some genuinely jaw-dropping visuals and twists.

But we have got some bad news: even though a third part of the narrative was being developed by co-creators Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling (who also plays the titular character), ” The OA has been cancelled by Netflix.

In a statement, Netflix mind of originals Cindy Holland stated, “We’re incredibly pleased with the 16 mesmerizing chapters of The OA, and are thankful to Brit and Zal for sharing their audacious vision and for realizing it through their unbelievable artistry.”

However, what could have occurred in the series’s third season? We caught up with Jason Isaacs (Dr’Hap’ Hunter) and Kingsley Ben-Adir (private detective Karim Washington) to Determine the potential future of this OA…

No, Netflix has cancelled the series, as we said. But, Batmanglij and Marling certainly have plans for how the story will advance, should it be revived.

“They’ve got all five seasons mapped out in their head. They did until they started,” Isaacs told RadioTimes.com before year two was launched. “And that is one of the reasons, I think, why the show was originally picked up by Netflix. Since they came with this fully-formed thing. It’s their singular voices. It will not bear the stamp of any executive advancement.”

He added: “I am so invested in watching it as a fan I hope to god that people like the show as much as I do since we’d like to get a year three, five and four.”

Like Lucifer, of course, there’s always the possibility the show could be revived on a different network or streaming service. However, the show hasn’t been picked up everywhere.

When will The OA season 3 be on TV?

The OA Season 3

Having a nearly two-and-a-half-year gap between the first and second season, fans might need to be patient to find out whether a third season materializes, should it have picked up.

In November 2018, Marling gave a really”granular” excuse to why the series’s second season — initially commissioned in 2017 — was taking so long to reach screens. Citing the way the OA wasn’t a product of a”pattern narrative”, Marling indicated the series’s unformulaic nature added to its long generation times.

“Our figures vary in length, extent, and even genre,” she explained. “There is not any pattern. As a result, at each step along the way nothing could be imitated; it has to be devised.”

And then there is the dilemma before The OA could be placed into the camera, of finishing the writing. “Because I am both the lead performer and a direct author, we can not leap-frog the creation. We have to write all eight chapters upfront until we can start shooting on the first chapter,” Marling explained.

She added: “Some people thought of Part I of The OA as a lengthy film,” Marling writes. “If you look at it from that standpoint, Zal [Batmanglij] and I write and create an 8-hour movie every two decades. That is pretty fast considering most 2-hour films take a minimum of two years to create!”

To put it differently, even if another service does decide to create more episodes of this OA, it could be a while until they see them.

What could happen in the third season of The OA?

If picked up, it’s likely — to get stranger. That’s according to Ben-Adir. “I understand where it is going in the next season, which can be NUTS! Like, unthinkable! Genuinely! Like, not in a way I’m attempting to sell it. It’s mad!” He said.

“You think that it goes there, but it goes [begins pointing] there and there and then there!”

However, Isaacs later indicated future seasons wouldn’t be as chaotic as this seems:”[Batmanglij and Marling], believe me, have thought about what. Everybody will be rewarded with the time we hit the conclusion of the journey.”

Who could be in the cast of The OA period?

Inspired by Ben-Adir’s comments on a”crazy” third period to come, it is very likely that his personality — Karim Washington — would reunite for the third year. Saying he understood” some portion of where we are going”, Isaacs’ Dr Hunter could also go back to the show.

There is also the chance that both actors understand what will happen in the later seasons of The OA despite being murdered. At this point, we can’t be sure.

But, we can be quite confident Marling’s character, Prairie Johnson would be included by a third season. Not only is that the blind woman so integral to this story, but The OA, her name, is the show’s name.

But beyond that, there is no sign whether other characters, such as Riz Ahmed’s FBI Psychologist or Patrick Gibson’s mad teen Steve Winchell, will reunite for another dose of inter-dimensional travelling and interpretive dance.
