Since Netflix dropped its adaptation of My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s comic book The Umbrella Academy, lovers can’t get enough of the superpowered, time-travelling, apocalypse-stopping Hargreeves family. The show, from Steve Blackman (Altered Carbon, Legion) and Jeremy Slater (The Exorcist), in an inexplicable event that led 43 superpowered infants to be born on precisely the same day to girls who showed no symptoms of maternity in 1989 – precisely the seven adopted and trained to save the planet by the elusive Sir Reginald Hargreeves finally – has been a quirky, explosive adventure (plus a constant hit for the streamer) now for two seasons.
In the sci-fi show’s run thus far, the fam needed to put a stop to the apocalypse not once, but twice — but their work protecting the universe seems far from over. Considering Season 2’s surprising finale, it’s fair to wonder what the next assignment is for Vanya, Five, Klaus, Allison, Diego, Ben, and Luther. So, when will The Umbrella Academy be back in session? Here’s what we know so far.
Will there be a Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy?
A third season of The Umbrella Academy has not yet been confirmed. It may feel like the apocalypse now with no news of a formal renewal, but do not worry, the world probably does not end for the Hargreeves kids and The Umbrella Academy. Netflix tends to examine the viewership information of its releases before announcing an extra season. Since Season 2’s late July release, the show has always been among the most-watched series on the streamer, so another installation is likely from the tote. It’s only a matter of when we’ll find the official word.
When will Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy be published?
Without confirmation of another season, we could only assume when the series will be back. Season 1 culminated in February 2019 and Season 2 hit Netflix in late July 2020, so should they continue to stay with this year-and-a-half-long timeframe, new episodes could be arriving sometime in fall 2021. That’s considering if the pandemic improves and allows for remote work and production, too.
Who will return for Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy?
While nothing has been verified, it would make sense that every member of the household return. Meaning expects to see more of Vanya (Ellen Page), Five (Aidan Gallagher), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Diego (David Castañeda) and Luther (Tom Hopper), along with also the Hargreeves patriarch, Sir Reginald (Colm Feore).
While their brother Ben (Justin H. Min) was presumed to die in 2006, it appears given the Season 2 finale that prophecy did not go as intended — significance, he will probably be around too. Besides the members of the Academy, SyFy reported that at a 2020 media tour showrunner Steve Blackman verified that we’d be seeing more of season newcomer and their sister in being born to different women under miraculous circumstances Lila (Ritu Arya), too.
Will there be any new characters?
The show may have just provided a glimpse of the six shadowy figures which comprise the mysterious Sparrow Academy (more about that below), but considering they made a short introduction just before Season two was it would make sense to view at least those new faces in the upcoming events. There have not been any announcements regarding who will play that set of superpowered teens, however.
Additionally, it’s reasonable to presume that down the line, and we will continue to fulfil more of the 43 babies. Blackman even echoed this to The Wrap saying, “It’s established within the series that there are other people. There’s Lila, and when there’s Lila, then there are more.”
What will Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy be about?
Though the Hargreeveses was able to put in the work to stop the apocalypse by travel back to the’60s, rather than finally getting a little appreciation from their neglectful, mysterious father, it looks like all they’re getting is just another mess to correct. Just as Season 2 wrapped up, it had been shown that in preventing the conclusion of the world, the siblings unintentionally changed the course of history and their variant of 2019 no longer exists. It’s reasonable to presume that this little problem is going to be the focus of Season 3, especially who Sir Reginald’s replacement recruits, called the Sparrow Academy, are and what this implies to the Umbrella Academy’s own lives.
Showrunner Steve Blackman told Inverse that the Sparrow Academy” are fresh people” entirely rather than only alternative versions of their family members understand and love, so definitely expect to be introduced to them in detail next season. That’s assuming he was speaking to everyone else besides Ben, that was proven to currently be part of the Sparrow Academy, which is very eerie, calling into question how this new route in time affected the presence and lives of rest of the Hargreeves — er, maybe former Hargreeves.
Together with them reunited, however, even if it’s having an alternate version of Ben, this might be the season that things finally come together for the faulty family. Blackman clarified to The Wrap that it’s important to remember the show has just spanned three weeks so far (!!), and more time together could only stand to reap them after spending a lot of years apart. “I like to believe as we go forward that their powers will also be evolving. They are learning new things,” Blackman said. “They had been trained until they were 14 or 15 with a dysfunctional father, but then the household blew apart before they could finish their training. […] They may even discover later on that their powers are more powerful when they are together.”
The Hargreeves are dysfunctional would be an understatement, though, so anything is game for the upcoming instalment. Dig yourself some Reddit theory holes at the meantime, however, and we’re going to continue to update this article as more information about Season 3 becomes accessible.
