It will not take a time-traveling bag to know that Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy will almost certainly get renewed for a third year. Based on Nielsen’s TV ratings, it was the most-streamed series on all platforms in August, followed only by Showtime’s Shameless and ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy.
Netflix has not yet declared an Umbrella Academy Season 3, but Season two sets it up for one entirely. After quitting the apocalypse again in 1963, the Umbrella Academy siblings teleport back to 2019 and see their actions have vastly altered the timeline. Their father and Ben are alive, and a brand new super-powered group — the Sparrow Academy — is calling their mansion home. What’s more, fellow sibling Lila is out there somewhere with a Commission briefcase, and Sissy’s son Harlan nevertheless has Vanya’s telekinesis powers. Although Season 2 pretty much caught up to the comics that the show relies on, these cliffhangers offer a glimpse into what to expect from the third season. Let us run down what we know thus far.
When will Umbrella Academy Season 3 premiere?
Together with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it is difficult to tell when a third-year might premiere. Season 1 debuted in February 2019, and Netflix announced its renewal in April 2019. According to Umbrella Academy celebrity Tom Hopper’s Instagram, we filmed for Season two wrapped in November 2019. It did not broadcast until July 2020, likely due to studio closures slowing down post-production. Toronto, where Umbrella Academy is filmed, is currently allowing studios to resume filming; contemplating it takes about a year to get Netflix shows to generate a whole season, though, we might be looking at a fall 2021 launch for Season 3.
The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Cast
We can safely assume that all of the Umbrella Academy siblings will be back – and that mainly includes Justin H. Min’s Ben, who is now entirely in the land of the living. Colm Feore’s Sir Hargreeves will also probably play a significant role since the siblings continue to grapple with their childhood traumas – today face to face with the man who imposed it. We don’t understand when the changes the Umbrella Academy produced in 1963 also usually means that the robot Grace and Pogo now existed again in 2019 — and when, like Ben, they will be quite different from how we remember them.
There’s also a reasonably good possibility that Ritu Arya’s Lila will feature heavily in the third season. Showrunner Steve Blackman formerly told Bustle we could “hope to visit [Lila and Diego] trying to find each other” since”she does love Diego and he loves her.” Other characters introduced in Season 2, such as Allison’s husband Ray and Vanya’s love interest Sissy, will not be returning. At the same time, Blackman affirmed Kate Walsh’s Handler is dead now (though that does not rule out possible flashbacks or more time traveling). “If we did the math, Ray would be an ancient guy in 2019,” Blackman said. “Same with Sissy. I think these are characters we met this year, and next season, we’ll meet new men and women.”
What is Umbrella Academy Season 3 about?
A third-year will most likely research what it means for the Umbrella Academy now that their father is alive and has abandoned them to get his new children. Though the Sparrow Academy members seem as allies at the comics, Ben’s bad attitude suggests that both classes’ association might be antagonistic.
Beyond this, we don’t yet understand where Blackman will take the sequence. Season two was very loosely based on the second quantity of this Umbrella Academy comics, Dallas. It pulled in the large Sparrow Academy reveal from the third volume, Resort Oblivion. Resort Oblivion entails the siblings traveling to prison at a pocket dimension in deep space; also, in Season two, there was a short sign that Hargreeves is considering something about the dark side of the moon. Does this mean we’ll see the team in astronaut gear in Season 3? Possibly. At the very least, maybe we will finally learn if Luther’s seemingly pointless time on the moon was building toward something after all.
