The legend of King Arthur and Camelot has been reinvented and retold for centuries, but not quite like Cursed. The Netflix TV series turns traditional Arthurian legend on its mind, shifting the focus to Nimue, future Lady of the Lake, queen of this magical Fey, and wielder of some legendary Sword of Power.
Arthur’s there too however in Cursed he is more of a supporting player, a love interest for Nimue plus a mercenary who comes into his own on the battlefield. We also get reimagined versions of other icons from Arthurian myth, such as King Uther, a few future Knights of the Round Table, and legendary wizard Merlin.
With religious zealots the Red Paladins performing their very best to eliminate the Fey, season 1 climbed into a bloody crescendo before wrap up with assorted cliffhangers – at least among these literal. As speculation grows about a follow-up, we anticipate a possible Cursed season two, and what you can expect as it arrives. Spoilers for Cursed period 1 follow.
Cursed season 2 Release date on Netflix
Netflix is yet to give an official greenlight to Cursed year two, but if the streaming service follows the previous form, we will anticipate a renewal statement to come around a month after season 1’s launch. The show dropped on July 17, so we’d hope for news in mid-August.
Assuming the series does get picked to get another season, it is unlikely we would see it before the next half of 2021. There are usually around 18 months between seasons of Netflix shows – particularly those with production values as lavish as Cursed’s –, and that is before you factor in the coronavirus-related problems now in drama. After social distancing and travel restrictions come in the equation, chances of Cursed season two landing until 2022 seem slender.
Cursed season 2 trailer: is there one?
Having a renewal to be declared, it’s too early for a Cursed season two trailer. Don’t bank on any actual footage revealed until much nearer to discharge — although Netflix will treat us to some teaser movie to tie in with a brand new season announcement, as they did Stranger Matters season 4.
What we expect from Cursed season 2?
With Wheeler and Miller (both the executive producers on the TV series ) having already exhibited a willingness to have fun with based Arthurian lore, what happens next is anybody’s guess – even if you’ve read La Morte d’Arthur, or watched Excalibur, Merlin and The Sword in the Stone.
We would be very surprised, but if we have seen the last of Nimue – even though she was last sighted tumbling to a mountain river after being shot with arrows by obsessed Red Paladin assassin Sister Iris. Not merely is Nimue the focus of the series, we all know that rivers tend to locate their way into larger bodies of water — remarkably convenient for a character who’s always been destined to become the Lady of the Lake. It seems likely that some nature-driven magic will ensure that she stays alive.
“Nimue comes in the area of magic,” said Miller in a 2019 interview with Barnes and Noble. “Nimue is a creature of great power coming into her power. Her trip in the narrative is our travel. We follow her because we follow Luke Skywalker in Star Wars. She’s the alpha and the omega.” That doesn’t sound like the description of a personality who would be lost after a single season. It doesn’t look like Nimue actress Katherine Langford believes she’s done with the function, either:
“I feel like [season 1] is just the tip of the iceberg,” she told Elle. “There is a great deal of discuss the sword this year, and that I feel like it’d be intriguing to see just how deep Nimue’s powers go and what type of untapped power she has within.”
With Merlin now shown as Nimue’s dad, his Cursed season 2 arc will presumably be driven by a quest to find his daughter. Now he’s rediscovered his magic powers — and that is the only real brandishing the mythical Sword of Power – he is certain to be an even more powerful force out this time. You would not wish to stay in his way.
Throughout Cursed season 1, the mercenary Arthur gradually found a trigger in the form of shielding the Fey. That is surely a crucial initial step in his inescapable journey towards becoming king – unless there are loads of folks called Arthur in this entire world, and this is only a clever decoy.
He might also wind up at a single corner of a love triangle because with Nimue seemingly out of this way, and the route could be clear for a romance with Viking warrior the Red Spear. Why? As soon as it’s not shown in the show, the illustrated novel explains her actual name is Guinevere, strongly hinting she’ll be Arthur’s queen one day.
We’ve also got a hunch that Arthur will join forces with all the Fey-hunting Weeping Monk, now that he’s apparently on the path to salvation after rescue Squirrel at the season 1 finale. The most compelling evidence came after the Weeping Monk showed his real name is Lancelot. Together with Squirrel also admitting he is named Percival, a chair in Camelot’s famous Round Table is surely part of their future – monikers like that can not be a coincidence.
Meanwhile, there’s a vacancy in the head of the Red Paladins, after the passing of Father Carden. Now that Sister Iris has (seemingly ) assassinated Nimue, and has been invited to join with the Pope’s Trinity Guard, it seems likely she’ll become Cursed’s main antagonist in year two.
And then there’s yet another crucial question of individuality… Is your Sword of Power Excalibur? It has to be, right?
Cursed season 2 cast: who we think will return?
Having been slain by Nimue at the season 1 finale, Peter Mullan’s Father Carden looks set to be the most significant absentee in Cursed season two – unless he returns in flashback.
Beyond that, we guess the cast list will be more or less the same as it’s been in year 1, with Katherine Langford back as Nimue, Gustaf Skarsgård as Merlin, Devon Terrell as Arthur, Daniel Sharman since the Weeping Monk,” Shalom Brune-Franklin as Morgana, Emily Coates as Sister Iris, Billy Jenkins as Squirrel, Bella Dayne as the Red Spears, Lily Newmark as Pym, Sebastian Armesto as Uther and Clive Francis as the Pope.
There might also be a way back for Gawain (Matt Stokoe). After Gawain’s departure in the season 1 finale, Nimue used her magic powers to encase her buddy in protective crops – an act that will maybe give the character a vital lifeline. If Gawain does return from the dead, however, we suspect the experience somewhat change him – perhaps he actually will turn into the”Green Knight” of legend.
