Tandav makers decide to abandon controversial scenes after meeting with the I&B ministry


After their second meeting with officials from the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Tuesday, the creators of Tandav decided to remove certain controversial scenes from the web series. They released a statement reporting the same and thank the I&B officials for their guidance.

The creators of the political drama, along with representatives from Amazon Prime Video, held a second meeting by video conference with the Ministry of I&B after being asked to explain their position on Monday. The ministry had received several complaints against the web series Amazon Prime Video to portray Hindu gods on the show.


Director Ali Abbas Zafar stated after meeting with the I & B ministry and announced that they would drop the controversial scenes. The statement read: “We have the utmost respect for the feelings of the people of our country. We did not intend to hurt or offend the feelings of any individual, caste, community, race, religion, or religious belief or to insult or outrage any institution—political party or person, alive or dead.

“The cast and crew of Tandav have decided to implement the web series changes to address the concerns raised about it. We thank the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for guidance and support on the matter. We once again apologize if the series has inadvertently hurt anyone’s feelings (sic) “.


On Monday, Ali Abbas Zafar, along with producer Himanshu Mehra, apologized for hurting people’s feelings inadvertently through their web series, Tandav. They have said that Tandav was “a work of fiction” and that they “unconditionally apologize if he has inadvertently hurt someone’s feelings.” They had added, “We have been closely monitoring viewers’ reactions to the Tandav web series, and today during a discussion, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting informed us about a large number of complaints and requests received in various facets of the web series. With serious concerns and apprehensions about its content that hurt people’s feelings”.


Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, Tandav is a political thriller set in New Delhi. The show premiered on Amazon Prime Video on January 15, stars Saif Ali Khan, Sunil Grover, Dimple Kapadia, and Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub in leading roles. It also features acclaimed actors like Gauahar Khan, Kritika Kamra, Tigmanshu Dhulia, and Kumud Mishra in major roles.

The decision to make changes to Tandav came after several FIRs were brought against the creators and actors to portray Hindu gods on the show. Several BJP leaders demanded action against Tandav. PTI reported that Haryana Interior Minister Anil Vij demanded that the show be removed from the digital platform and urged the government to make a provision to censor web series before they are shown.

In Uttar Pradesh, a third FIR was brought against the series, including charges under the SC / ST Law and the Information Technology Law, against Ali Abbas Zafar, producer Himanshu Mehra, actors Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia, Sunil Grover, writer Gaurav Solanki, and Amazon Prime India Director Aparna Purohit.
